A new study of 1 1.5 million people shows that obesity, overweight even, shortens your life expectancy. So says the analysis – obese people are 44% much more likely to die earlier than those in the so-called ideal BMI range. So says Ali Mokdad, Ph.D., a teacher of global health at the University of Washington, in Seattle.
The latest research was launched after a controversial 2005 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that concluded carrying excess fat didn’t improve the risk of death; that record included smokers and those with pre-existing ailments. The CDC study was actually a re-examining of existent data and an entrance that the wrong conclusions have been drawn. It was only controversial among those advocating diets! The new study doesn’t settle anything because it made the same mistake pointed out by Dr Stephen Blair, PhD, head of the Cooper Institute.
I’m sure the pundits are banking on the fact that the general public either has a short memory or else, hasn’t seen the Cooper Institute studies. University of SC obesity researcher Steven Blair said the results were constant with other studies and the “massive work” was commendable. But he said there wasn’t enough information available about fitness level or exercise.
- 2 or 3 average carrots
- Processor: Dual-core Exynos 3250
- Keep intensity high and rest between sets to a minimum – only 60 secs
- The Social Aspect
- Weighty will demand three thousand energy per day
- History of gestational diabetes or delivery of a baby of more than nine pounds
A proponent of the “fit and fat” theory, Blair said his research has shown that obese folks who are tested and deemed fit didn’t face increased risks of dying. Seemingly coincidental to the discharge of the new research which looks impressive to the unquestioning vision of the public, the Allergan company has petitioned the FDA to lessen the weight limit for acquiring the lap band obesity surgery. At this time, only people who are at a BMI of 40 or higher or 35 with co-morbidities can have their insurance pay for a lap band. Allergan would like to see that minimal weight lowered to a BMI of 35 or 30 with co-morbidities.
Even CNN remarked on the fact that the top of the FDA committee petitioned to lessen this weight requirement, is the owner of stock in the Allergan Company! Not merely did she not recuse herself (which she should have done!) but the FDA noted that it was “OK” for her to be with this committee as long as she didn’t vote!
The lap band is a much safer surgery than the gastric bypass. It’s a band placed around the very best of the stomach which may be tightened or loosened and is supposed to limit how much an individual can eat and therefore cause a weight loss. Obviously, what it restricts (if it is not enlarged i.e. some music group patients complain of their belly swelling shut each day) will be the good bulky foods like vegetables. Milkshakes, ice cream, and wedding cake attractively go down.
Although unlike the gastric bypass, which is greatly troubled by long-term vitamin deficiencies in many patients, the rap music group is not without its group of repercussions. A particular percentage of patients go through the band growing into the stomach, needing removal and/or a gastrectomy thus. Mostly what I hear lap band patients complain about is discomfort and difficulty in keeping off the weight. The difficulty in keeping off the weight complaint, one hears from gastric bypass patients also. What science really says is, if you cannot keep from the weight, it’s healthier never to lose it in the first place as “weight bicycling” or “yo yo dieting” increases the risks for heart attacks significantly. For the rest, it is strongly recommended that they consider following the “Health at Every Size” guidelines – Linda Bacon’s reserve on this is great!
